Grounding Techniques That Actually Work (And Why Most Don't)

Grounding advice is everywhere, and much of it fails — not because grounding doesn't work, but because techniques are handed out with no attention to which state your nervous system is actually in. A tool that calms an anxious system can push a shut-down system further away. Here is how to match the technique to the moment.

First, locate yourself

Ask: am I revved up (racing thoughts, tight chest, restless, irritable) or am I shut down (numb, foggy, heavy, far away)? These need opposite medicine.

If you are revved up: discharge first

An activated system has energy that needs somewhere to go. Stillness often backfires here — which is why being told to "sit and breathe" can make anxiety worse.

  • **Lengthen the exhale.** Inhale for four, exhale for eight. The long exhale is a direct signal to the vagus nerve. Two minutes, minimum
  • **Push.** Press your palms hard against a wall for thirty seconds. Feel your muscles complete the effort your body has been holding
  • **Orient.** Slowly turn your head and let your eyes land on five things around you. You are telling an ancient system: I have looked, and there is no lion
  • **Cold water on the wrists or face.** Crude, effective, backed by physiology

If you are shut down: warm the system gently

A dorsal, numb state does not need stimulation — it needs safe, gradual invitation back.

  • **Weight and warmth.** A heavy blanket, a hot water bottle on the chest, warm socks. The body reads these as safety
  • **Rock.** Sit and rock gently forward and back. It is how we were first regulated, and the body never forgets
  • **Hum.** Humming vibrates the vagus nerve directly. A few minutes of low humming is one of the most underrated practices I know
  • **One sense at a time.** Not 5-4-3-2-1 all at once — just one texture, felt slowly. Shutdown systems are overwhelmed by too much, too fast

Why grounding alone isn't the whole answer

Techniques are first aid. They manage states; they do not resolve why your system leaves safety so easily in the first place. That deeper repatterning happens through consistent, relational work — a regulated nervous system alongside yours, teaching your body what techniques alone cannot.

That is what my sessions offer, and what the free Soul Reset audio begins: not another tool to try harder at, but an experience of being settled. Start there tonight. Ten minutes, lying down. Let your body remember.
